Vision
Mathematics is a beautiful subject which has its own unique place in the curriculum at La Salette Catholic Primary School. It provides learners with powerful ways to describe, analyse and change the world. Children can experience a sense of awe and wonder as they solve a problem for the first time, discover a more elegant solution and make links between different areas of mathematics. The mathematics developed in this century will be the basis for the technological and scientific innovations developed in the next one. The thought processes, the ways of looking at things, the habits of mind used by mathematicians, computer scientists and scientists will be mirrored in systems that will influence almost every aspect of our daily lives.
If we want to empower our students for life after school, we need to prepare them to be able to use, understand, control and modify a class of technology that doesn’t yet exist. That means we have to help them develop genuinely mathematical ways of thinking.
Mathematics is the means of looking at the patterns that make up our world and the intricate and beautiful ways in which they are constructed and realised. The language of mathematics is international. The subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised. Mathematics helps us to understand and change the World.
Mathematics makes a significant contribution to modern society;
· The basic skills of mathematics are vital for the life opportunities of our children;
· Mathematics develops the mind and those highly valued cognitive skills.
Aims and Objectives – Whole school
·
· To foster positive attitudes, fascination and excitement of discovery through the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts.
· For our children to develop a ‘can do’ attitude and perceive themselves as mathematicians.
· To broaden children’s knowledge and understanding of how mathematics is used in the wider world.
- For our children to use and understand mathematical language and recognise its importance as a language for communication and thinking.
Curriculum Planning in Mathematics
We carry out the curriculum planning in mathematics in three phases (long-term, medium-term and short-term). The Abacus Evolve Scheme of Work gives a detailed outline of what we teach in the short term. The scheme is accessed on-line and staff are able to make full use of the interactive teaching resources. We supplement this with extended activities from MyMaths.
